Krabi authorities yesterday inspected Ao Nang beach in the Phi Phi Island marine national park following complaints from tourism association of waste water pollution that has threatened tourism and scared away quality tourists from Scandinavian countries.
The team of authorities led by the deputy governor of Krabi Mr Narong Wunsiew comprises Nopparat Tara national park officials, pollution control officials, and Ao Nang Tambon local administration office officials.
The team found several business operators on the beach have encroached on public canals and discharged untreated waste water into the canals.
Although these business operators have installed waste treatment or have grease trap facilities, but some of them didn’t work properly, thus resulting in untreated waste water or fatty oils leaking into the canals and into the sea.
Authorities have informed 14 business operators to improve and repair their waste water treatment facilities within seven days with warning of legal action if next reinspection show they are not corrected.
The team will today inspect more business operators along the beach roads to make sure they will not release untreated waste into the canal, and also will dredge the public canals to facilitate the flow of water.
