There are very few channels for acquiring original and reliable materials and issues. There are very few channels for acquiring original and reliable materials and information. Many scholars rely on scattered, trivial and not very reliable materials from local newspapers in the Southeast Asian countries. The situation is no better in China. Materials concerning Overseas Chinese affairs are not systematically collected and catalogued. As a result, due to the scarcity of material and information, many researchers indulged in unwarranted conclusion. Few were able to produce important and valuable works. Instead, some “arm-chair” scholars could produce thousands of words overnight without a single footnote, making sweeping generalizations and policy recommendations. After all,the situation has improved slightly in recent years. Some research institutes have begun to build their resources and have published volumes on the collection of materials.Yet there is still a long way to go before the page of resource development can meet the research demands.
