As noted before, the dependent variable in this study was formed from two questions about the death penalty. On each question, approximately 70% of the surveyed students supported the death penalty. These results were lower than those (78% to 88%) found by Cao and Cullen (2001) but similar to that (72%) found by Liang et al. (2006). With regard to the four questions about deterrence of the death penalty, the respondents’ supporting rate varied from 46% to 74%. Some percentages were higher whereas others are lower than that (53%) revealed by Cao and Cullen (2001).
