ZigBee is a specification for a cost-effective, low-rate and low-power wireless communication protocol for home automation, monitoring and control. It aims to pro-vide short range wireless networking which is scalable, self-organizing and secure, while providing battery life up to two years. Although having existed since late 2004, ZigBee has yet to prove its success, at least in the indus-trial domain where reliability and security are uttermost important. In this section we give a short technical in-troduction to ZigBee, providing the background for our comparison to WirelessHART in the next section.
