This work was supported by grants from the national key basic research program of china, the national key technologies R&D program of china, the national natural science foundation of china, and the key lad foundation of Liaoning province .we thank two anonymous reviewers and Dr. David Eldridge for valuable comments that improved the manuscript. Thank are also extended to He-ming Lin and Gui-yan Ai for considerable assistance with laboratory procedures, and to our other colleagues who participated in the fieldwork.
Our study clearly demonstrates that the afforestation of grassland in the study area has the potential of sequestering atmospheric C. aboveground and belowground C stocks differed depending on standage and tree species. Mineral soil C stocks decreased during the early stage of forest establishment, but then recovered with increasing stand age. However, the time required for mineral soil C stocks to completely recover the former grassland levels differed for each of the two tree species. Therefore, stand age and tree species should be considered in the management of afforestation project that aim to produce C sinks under the Kyoto protocol.
