Caffeine has been shown to promote
increased AMPK-dependent glucose uptake and fatty acid utilization
by increasing the calcium-dependent activation of AMPK in
mammalian skeletal muscle cells. However, it remains unclear
if caffeine can promote autophagy in skeletal muscle cells by specifically
promoting the calcium-dependent activation of AMPK. The
purpose of this study was to examine the role of calcium-induced
AMPK activation in regulating caffeine-induced autophagy in
mammalian skeletal muscle cells
