Taipei, Dec. 5 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) attributed Friday the growth of bilateral trade with New Zealand over the past 10 months to an economic cooperation agreement between the two economies that was signed July 10, 2013.
Since the Agreement between New Zealand and the separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu on Economic Cooperation (ANZTEC) took force Dec. 1 last year, exports from New Zealand to Taiwan had increased 24.57 percent as of September, while Taiwanese exports to New Zealand rose 14.97 percent, Taiwan's MOFA said in a press release.
Under the economic cooperation pact, many business opportunities have been created through mutual visits by trade delegations of the two economies, the statement said, noting that there have been good interactions between enterprises on the two sides, which have further strengthened two-way trade and economic links.
Apart from the trade and economic exchanges, the agreement has also opened the doors to each other in the fields of civil aviation, culture and travel. It refers to the launch of flight services between Taipei and Christchurch by China Airlines, Taiwan's largest air carrier.
Taiwan's MOFA also noted that New Zealand will be a theme nation in the upcoming 2015 Taipei International Book Exhibition slated for Feb. 11-16 next year.
The fruits of the ANZTEC prove that the Taiwanese government's polices of promoting trade and economic liberalization and seeking trade agreements with other countries meet the nation's needs in the pursuit of future developments.
As a result, Taiwan will continue its bid for access to regional economic blocs, including the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, so that it can catch up with the global trend for economic integration.
ANZTEC is the first agreement of its type to include substantive chapters on trade and labor, trade and environment, and indigenous people. It includes a commitment to immediately liberalize 132 environmental products deemed to support green growth and sustainable development objectives.
The agreement also calls for the expansion of existing cultural and economic links between New Zealand's Maori and the aboriginal people of Taiwan in terms of indigenous arts, culture and tourism.
