The
reweighting process seems to be altered in older adults
(Horak et al. 1989b; Prioli et al. 2005) as a consequence
of age-related degenerative processes, but it is not clear if
such changes take place involving central (Teasdale et al.
1991; Prioli et al. 2005) or peripheral mechanisms (Woollacott
et al. 1986) affecting sensory integration. The worst
consequence of the failure to effectively adapt to altered
sensory inputs is the postural equilibrium disruption and,
ultimately, falling, which is unfortunately experienced by
many older adults.
