Not surprisingly then, one of the aims of Dutch tourism policy is to stimulate domestic tourism. However, knowledge about the vacation choice behavior of Dutch tourists is limited (Bargeman, 2001). Existing Dutch studies are dated, fragmented and pay little or no attention to the vacation decision-making process. This qualitative study on the extensiveness of the vacation choice process is part of a larger research project, which aims to fill the existing knowledge gap. The larger project deals with the question why and how Dutch vacationers decide to spend their holiday in their own country.
