Sucrose content differed significantly among crops
(Table 1). In this experiment, crop and year were confounded.
Previous work suggests that year effects are
more significant than crop effects for sucrose content
(Milligan et al., 1990; Kang et al., 1987). During 1998,
a severe drought across southern Louisiana was a major
factor in decreasing sucrose content. More typical
sucrose levels were produced for the 1999 and 2000
crops. Interactions with crop were nonsignificant. As
would be expected, yield components varied among
cultivars.
