From 1990 to 2005,
produce outbreaks were responsible for 13% of all foodborne outbreaks
and 21% of all foodborne illnesses (DeWaal & Bhuiya, 2007).
A more recent report, analyzing outbreaks from 1998 to 2007,
indicated that produce outbreaks caused 15% of all foodborne
outbreaks and 23% of all foodborne illnesses (Center for Science in
the Public Interest, 2009)
