Children’s failure to grasp and employ the alphabetic principle is one of the main stumbling blocks to their progress in reading. Moreover, children vary widely in how readily they grasp the alphabetic principle and hoe much explicit teaching they need; some children need more instruction to grasp it, while other children pick it up quickly and would be bored and frustrated by such instruction.
