Merging technologies from 2 different eras, Impalpable Descriptivism is a reactive audio sculpture that asks participants located anywhere within a mobile phone network to utilize a limited ubiquitous mobile input method (text messaging) and develop a detailed real space account (the printed facsimile) of something insignificant, mundane or otherwise difficult to put into words. By asking participants to push beyond the surface and communicate the subject in a more verbose way than is necessary, a narrative-based inquiry develops. As an exploration of asynchronous collective performance, the printed results are used in real time in order to create a sound work composed entirely from recorded samples of sounds resulting from mundane objects and actions.
