The Lyobov Orlova is a cruise ship, only recently known for Antarctic cruises. In February last year it was moved to a scrapyard in the Dominican Republic from Canada. On the way a cable snapped, and it was let loose into international waters. The Canadian government refused to pursue the ship and because it had no transponders on-board, it could not be easily located. She was later spotted off the coast of Ireland, prompting fears that a rat-infested "biohazard" could be heading towards the country. Irish Coast Guard director Chris Reynolds told the Irish Independent: "We don’t want rats from foreign ships coming onto Irish soil." He also warned that something could easily hit the Lyobov Orlova. Based on the ship's possible predicted path she could also be lying off the coast of Scotland. The ship's life-raft transmitters have not been set off indicating it could still be floating.
