Cluster 7 consists of six sites all located in modern day Udon Thani province in close proximity to the Songkhram River. Bahn Dorn Gairo and Bahn Chiang are Dvaravati period moated sites and represent the only two in the middle Mekong group. The sites are: Bahn Dorn Gairo (L7); Bahn Chiang (L58); Nong Han town (L59); Bahn Khon Sai (L67); Bahn Cham Pi (L107); and Ban Khon Sai (L108).The most important location in this group is Bahn Dorn Gairo, a large moated site possessing ten
sema
stones, one of which bears a two-line inscription. This inscription (K981) is in a Pre-Angkorian script in Sanskrit language dating to the 7th to 8th centuries, stating that this stone was set up as a boundary marker (Solheim and Gorman 1966: 181). The
sema
itself is unique in that it is almost cylindrical in design. Three other
sema
from this site are also similar typologically. They are octagonal in shape, but are also much more cylindrical than the more normal octagonal type found elsewhere in the Khorat Plateau, which in turn are more tapered and “bullet-like”.
