Pre-implementation data collection was completed in January, 2011 via the use of a process audit in which nurses’ actual
CVAD flushing techniques were observed and recorded.
The corporate in-services were then offered on four different
occasions during the first two weeks of February, 2011. Individual
and small group presentations, for all the nursing units
on all shifts, were also held during the first two weeks of February,
2011. Offering corporate in-services at different times of
the day, utilizing video broadcasting technology, and providing
individual in-services on the nursing units enhanced staff
participation. Following the completion of unit presentations,
post-education data collection was conducted during the final
two weeks of February, 2011, via the same process audit methodology
used for pre-education data collection. All data were
obtained by the same observer in order to maintain consistency
in scoring. Each educational offering was also conducted by
this same individual.
