The research was carried out in three steps. First, we analysed secondary data to
ascertain the formal statements of procedures and the organizational context. This
analysis was based on official information gathered from the documents presented for
the EPSA and UNPSA competitions. The documents were related mainly to internal
reports and guidelines concerning the hospital’s organization.
Second, we conducted semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions with
the key personnel involved in the project in order to understand the routines and
guidelines that underlay their behaviour, to investigate their actions and to assess their
resistance to (or support for) the change. We conducted these interviews between
March 2011 and January 2012, and focused on the nurses, surgeons, anaesthetists,
engineers and managers who were part of a multidisciplinary project team in the ORD.
Third, we undertook a period of direct observation of the interviewees in the wards
and the ORD. This provided us with an opportunity to contradict and/or verify the
information obtained from the interviews.
