5. Conclusions
This study found that BMD declines in female adolescents
during the first 2–3 years of DMPA use, but
substantially or fully recovers to baseline values in most
girls following discontinuation of this contraceptive method.
The possibility of a change in risk for future fragility fracture
arising from DMPA use remains to be investigated. The
results of the present study offer reassurance and further
information to health care providers who prescribe DMPA
for adolescents.
