1. Rationale
The ICS awareness building activity is the fourth step of the MHS-RE project’s improved cookstove (ICS), trying to promote and create realization of this renewable energy (RE) technology to Mae Hong Son. From the project framework, the MHS-RE started with a literature review and identified the ICS as the result of Step 1, then conducted stove performance experiment at Step 2, and village try-out with 55 volunteers in 14 villages (4 sub-districts in 3 districts) at Step 3.
The Step 2 and 3 could bring results that became a conclusion of the ICS model best suited to several MHS ethnic groups. During those steps, the project also encouraged the ICS volunteers, 60% women, as informal ICS promoters. Because they were ones who could very well introduce or describe their first-hand experiences and benefits gained in using the ICS to their neighbors and friends.
The interview results from all ICS volunteers show that:
a) ICS is energy efficiency; it reduces the use of biomass fuel around 30-50% and produces lesser smoke compared to ordinary Aung-lo cooking stove.
b) ICS helps save household expenditure for fuel, save time for gathering firewood, and reduces cooking time.
c) ICS is not commonly known in the project target areas.
d) Inefficient cooking stove is still widely used in the target areas.
e) Number of stove users are increasing due to increasing price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
f) There are increasing use of biomass fuel.
g) There are increasing expenditure for buying biomass fuel because of increasing number of users and higher price of charcoal and firewood.
h) Women are the main users of household cooking stove. Thus, they are ones who expose to harmful smoke and at risk of respiratory diseases.
With these results, the project will be proceeding to the forth step on awareness building with the objective to promote ICS to wider group of potential users in MHS. The “Save 50% Campaign,” will be launched for 2 times; each for a different target group resides in 2 sub-districts that have similar development conditions.
This concept note is for the first “Save 50% Campaign” activity for a group of potential users in T. Wieng Nua and T. Pha Bong.
