Accordingly, this paper presents a study carried out in the year 2011 with a group of
Taiwanese non-English-major freshmen using authentic illustrated storybooks. Primarily, two research questions were explored: (1) How would young adult college students respond toreading children’s literature in the classroom? and (2) How would the students rate the over alleffectiveness of using children’s literature for fostering English competence? Drawing upon thefindings of the study, this paper then discusses key considerations for successful incorporation ofchildren’s literature in EFL college reading classrooms, including material selection, time allocation, etc. The paper’s conclusion is that it is imperative to create literacy programs which
promote pleasure reading of comprehensible authentic texts.
