Ironically, ‘‘garden variety’’ conceptions are increasingly cited as the foundation for
competitive advantage in today’s global marketplace, where responsibility for
organizational innovation has shifted from a creative elite to the entire corps of
employees (Friedman, 2005; Nonaka, 1990). Just as important, it is in the best interest of
organizations to retain these knowledge-rich individuals, since shared innovative
responsibility increases the value of each individual contributor (Florida and
Goodnight, 2005)
