Jorge say that he thinks that Sam has all the exciting new clients. He also things that Sam is getting 10000 more than he(Jorge) is, even though he has been your best performer and devotes countless hours to his work. Jorge wonders whether you value his work and ability and whether you ever really planned to promote him , because you obviously think his skills are not sufficient. Jorge meets with you again to discuss this.
you offer Jorge a bargain. You suggest that he work with Sam to learn
1. new skill, and you assign him to focus on the learning opportunities of working with Sam, becasue these new skills may translate to a promotion in the next year or two
2.you explain to Jorge that Sam received a large signing bonus (not an extraordinary salary)
because he brought new clients and critical new skills that the firm needs now. Remind Jorge that Sam has many more years of experience, and that he should compare himself to the other consultants at his level-not to Sam .
Tell Jorge that if he develops these new skills and bring is new clients he will get more money , too
3. You want to keep you team satisfied. As much as Sam adds to the firm, you cannot allow the team to fall apart . Everything was fine until you hired Sam . you explain that you made a mistake in tiring him and ask Sam to resign.
