Mould-induced asthma in mice repeatedly
exposed to Aspergillus versicolor and Cladosporium
cladosporioides—fungal species with respectively high and
low surface β-glucans—revealed that A. versicolor induces a
dectin-1 dependent Th17 response with neutrophilia and low
airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), whereas
C. cladosporioides induces a dectin-1 independent Th2 response
with eosinophilia and strong AHR [44, 45]. These data
suggest that fungi that expose low levels of β-glucans at their
surface are more susceptible to induce allergic Th2 polarised
immune responses
