The last leaf
Sue,a poor artist, rented a small studio of three-story brick apartment building in Greenwich Village for living with her friend, Johnsy. The cold from autumn in November made Johnsy got pneumonia, and it made her very ill. Doctor said to Sue that Johnsyhas one chance in ten and it depends on her will to live. Whenever she began to count the days until her own funeral, it didn’t matter what medicines he gave. After that, Sue walked to Johnsy’s. She saw Johnsy was counting backward. It was an old ivy vine climbed up the brick wall. The cold breath had blown its leaves from the branches. Johnsy said that when the last one fell she will go too. Then Sue went out to meet Behrman. He had been painting for forty years and he had been always been ready to paint a masterpiece but he never actually started one. He regarded himself to protect Sue and Johnsy. She explained everything about Johnsy to him. Sue went back to Johnsy’s room. There is the last leaf. Johnsy thought it would surely fall in that night. Sue did everything that’s can made Johnsy happy until she slept. The next day, the doctor said that she was safe. But It was sad that Mr.Behrman died of pneumonia that day after he was ill only two day. The janitor found him on the morning of the first day in his room. His shoes and clothing were wet and ice cold. And then found a lantern, a ladder, some brush and a palette. Sue and Johnsy looked out of the window at the last ivy leaf on the wall that didn’t move when the wind blew. It was Behrman’s masterpiece.
