Do you like pizza? People all over the world do. Where does it come from? Pizza comes from Italy, but the ingredients come from many places.
Today, pizza often has two basic ingredients. The first is bread. Bread is made from dough. In the Stone Age, the first dough was made from flour and water. Then it was cooked on hot rocks. Another basic ingredient is tomatoes. Tomatoes are from South America. They were first eaten as a food in Mexico. Explorers brought them to Europe in the 1500s.
The tradition of cooking tomatoes on dough began in the 1800s in Italy. At first, only poor people in Italy ate pizza. Now, nearly all people eat it. And countries have their own traditions. Ingredients today include cheeses, vegetables, meats, fish, and even fruit. In Korea, for example, people put crab and shrimp on pizza. The different toppings make each pizza tasty and special.
