At the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013, following the Euro-
pean Commission Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF, EC,
2013), the risk from mycotoxin contamination in feed and milk was
brought to public attention in Balkan and Central European coun-
tries. During the period mentioned above, there were ten alerts
reporting the presence of increased AFB 1 amounts in maize panel.
The AFB 1 concentrations detected were between 22.4 and 204 m g/
kg, revealing up to ten-fold higher level than the established MRL
(maximum residue level) of 20 ng/kg (EC, 2006b). Additionally, two
alerts have notified increased levels of AFM 1 in raw milk samples.
Following these alerts, and having on mind the fact that
Macedonia is highly dependenton the feed import, mainlyfromthe
region of South-East Europe, the increased concern led towards
establishment of measures for aflatoxin control in raw milk and
feed samples. In some previously conducted similar studies
(Decastelli et al., 2007), the approach to the aflatoxin problem by
coordinated milk-feed sampling resulted in successful detection of
the contamination source.
