CONTINUOUS RAINFALL since Tuesday has the rivers and canals in Phatthalung's six districts brimming over, while strong currents had a four-metre-wide section of the Loh Jangkra canal in Kong Ra district's Khlong Chalerm sub-district subside and bring down 10 trees.
Provincial governor Seri Srihatrai has called on all related agencies to dredge the canals to drain excess water, while urging kamnans and village headmen to watch out for possible landslides and flash floods round the clock in the meantime.
Meanwhile, Army Region 4 said they were ready to work with police and administration officials to help the public in case there is flooding. This follows the National Disaster Warning Centre issuing a warning yesterday that Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat may suffer flash floods, forest run-offs and landslides for the next day or two. Songkhla's Muang district reported 150 millimetres of rain yesterday. Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are predicted for the South until Saturday.
Separately, train services from Songkhla's Hat Yai station to Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district were temporarily suspended because a section of the tracks in Songkhla's Thepha district was severely flooded. Services were expected to resume by 6pm yesterday.
