In secondary classrooms, social patterns and group sentiments influence how students respond to an attitude or value that is new or different. To teach content with attitude and value outcomes, it will be necessary to provide opportunity for group discussions so that students can hear different points of view.
To have effective group discussions, everyone must be involved. A group size of 8 to 10 is the absolute maximum. Arrangement is important so that individuals can see everyone in the group. Discussion topics must spark interest. For secondary students, curfews, drug use, ecology, and nuclear power are appropriate topics. Suitable topics for elementary students include allowances, playground rules, and friendships. Students today have quite a bit of savvy and contribute to insightful discussions. With grouping and a small number of students in a group, everyone can be involved.
In situations dominated by you or a few students, few attitudes and values will be developed. One last reason for grouping must be included. We have been told by learners of different ages, “I am more comfortable expressing myself in a small group than in front of the whole class.” Grouping is a sensitive approach, an appropriate approach for working on the personal outcomes of attitudes and values.
