‘Monet, Gauguin, van Gogh … Japanese Inspirations’ brings to the Kunsthaus Zürich a major exhibition devoted to one of the most fascinating chapters in French art during the second half of the 19th century. With more than 350 works from around the globe, it offers a revealing insight into European perceptions of Japan at the time. The focus is on the period 1860 to 1910, from the early phase to the heyday of Japanese art’s reception in France. The presentation explores three different ways in which western artists engaged with Japan: the depiction of Japanese objects and motifs in their works; the transposition of pictorial themes and forms inspired by Japan to the western context, where they were reinterpreted; and the internalization of Japanese art’s characteristic styles and techniques. We hope you enjoy your visit!
