In addition, we conducted interviews with the principal, three self-contained classroom teachers (i.e., the teacher of grades 1 and 2, the teacher of grades 3 and 4, and the teacher of grades
5 and 6), three high school teachers of science and mathematics, the middle school math and
science specialist, the music and drama teacher, and a place-based educator hired by a local
nonprofit organization to provide job-embedded professional development to the teachers at the
school. In addition to educators, we conducted interviews with a school board member, a parent
who was actively engaged with the school, the school secretary, and two community members
who were involved in fund-raising and foundation management for the school.
The member of the team who visited the site also developed field notes capturing information
from participant observation and gathered relevant artifacts (newspapers, school plans, community
documents, and so forth). She recorded all interviews digitally, and another member of the research
team transcribed the interviews.
