TodayCannon’s (1988) study remains unparalleled among studies of Chinese borrowings
with regard to comprehensiveness. Cannon has presented an overview of the 979 borrowed
items, and is impressively thorough in developing the corpus and deleting duplications.
Cannon should also be commended on his generally insightful analysis of the borrowings
in relation to language source, semantics, and grammar, and on his brief comments on
the difference between loanwords and loan translations.
