There hasbeenconsiderableresearchontheenvironmentalimpactofsupplychainsbutmostofthishas
concentratedonthetransportelements.Theenvironmentalimpactofwarehousinghasreceived
relativelylittleattentionexceptwithinthecontextofdistributionnetworks.Ahighproportionoftotal
warehouseemissionsemanatefromheating,cooling,airconditioningandlightingandtheseaspectsare
largelyrelatedtowarehousesize.Thisinturnisgreatlyinfluenced byinventorymanagement,affecting
stockholdinglevels,andwarehousedesign,affectingthefootprintrequiredforholdingagivenamount
of stock.Otheremissions,suchasthosecausedbymaterialhandlingequipment,arecloselyrelatedto
warehousethroughputandequipmentchoice.Thereisasubstantialgapintheliteratureregardingthis
interactionbetweeninventoryandwarehousemanagementanditsenvironmentalimpact.Thepurpose
of thispaperistocontributeto filling thisgap.Therefore,anintegratedsimulationmodelhasbeenbuilt
to examinethisinteractionandtheresultshighlightthekeyeffectsofinventorymanagementon
warehouse-relatedgreenhousegasemissions.Inparticular,itisfoundthatdecisionsonsupplylead
times, reorderquantities,andstorageequipmentallhaveanimpactoncostsandemissionsand
thereforethisintegratedapproachwillinformpracticaldecisionmaking.Additionally,itisintendedthat
the paperprovidesaframeworkforfurtherresearchinthisimportantarea.

1. Introduction
In recentdecades,therehasbeenacontinuingriseinglobal
greenhouse gas(GHG)emissionswhichhasledtoanewpeakof
GHG intheatmospherein2013(WMO, 2014). Amongthem,
carbon dioxide(CO2) emissionsareconsideredasamajortrigger
of thegreenhouseeffectandareassociatedwithsubstantial
environmentaldamage.Inthelastdecadealone,CO2 emissions
reached anaverageannualincreaseofabout3%whichresultedin
a newrecordof34.5billiontonnesofCO2 being emittedinthe
year2012(Olivieretal.,2013). Takingintoaccountallgreenhouse
gases, equivalentcarbondioxide(CO2e) emissionsreachedatotal
amount ofabout50billiontonnesintheyear2012,andare
forecastedtoriseto58billiontonnesCO2e in2020(UNEP,2012;
Olivier etal.,2013). Whiletheconsumptionofenergyandthe
consequentemissionshavecontinuallyincreased,transportation
and storageareperceivedasanessentialdriverofenvironmental
pollution inglobalsupplychains.Itisestimatedthatabout
2.8 billiontonnesoftheoverallGHGemissions,whichisequiva-
lent toabout5.5%ofthetotalGHGemissions,arecausedbythe
logistics andtransportsector(WEF,2009).
Meanwhile,theenvironmentallysustainablemanagementof
logisticactivitieshasbecomeanessentialelementofbusiness
strategyandcompetitiveadvantage(Sarkis,2003;Deyetal.,
2011). Besidestheappreciablesocialandpoliticalpressureto
reduceGHGemissionscausedbyanincreasingpublicawareness
ofinducedglobalwarmingandclimatechanges,manycompanies
haverealizedthatthesustainableuseofresourcesmayalsobe
associatedwithsubstantial financialsavings(Plambeck,2012).
However,mostresearchintotheenvironmentalimpactoflogistics
hasconcentratedontheGHGemissionsassociatedwithtransport
activities(see,forexample, PiecykandMcKinnon,2010orUbedaet
al.,2011).Thisisunderstandableasthe WorldEconomicForum
(2009) estimatesthat,globally,mostsupplychainemissionsema-
natefromroadtransport(57%),followedbyoceanfreight(17%).
However,logisticsbuildings,comprisingwarehousesandsortation
facilities,aresignificant,accountingfor13%ofsupplychainemis-
sions.Thisismorethaneachoftheremainingcategoriesofair
freight(8%)andrailfreight(5%).National figures,whichnormally
excludetheinternationalelementoftransportmovements,how-
ever,emphasisethesignificanceofwarehouse-relatedemissions.In
