After the end of the Korean War in 1953, the 38 Parallel has divided the Peninsula into two parts which are the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Republic of Korea (ROK). DPRK is communist supported by Beijing and Moscow, the ROK is non-communist supported by the U.S. and Japan. As the ROK is an ally of the U.S., the DPRK asked Moscow and Beijing for help in developing nuclear weapons but was rejected, and later got help in nuclear research by Soviet and developed its own nuclear program. By 2009, the DPRK was a full nuclear power.
