During the periparturient period, physiological changes occur within a short period, and this period is the most criticalfor dairy cows. Dry matter intake (DMI) is insufficient to support the high milk production during early lactation, this leadsto a state of negative energy balance (EB) (Bell, 1995; Grummer, 1995). This state of negative EB results in an increase inmetabolic disorders such as ketosis and fatty liver (Grummer, 1993). Higher DMI and/or lower milk fat production in earlylactation generally can improve a severely negative EB (Ingvartsen and Andersen, 2000; Van Knegsel et al., 2007).
