Business Development Manager – Petco

The Petco Business Development Manager has direct account responsibility and is responsible for achieving our Natural Balance sales objectives consistent with corporate strategy and financial targets. Job functions include planning and executing against volume, distribution, pricing, merchandising, trade spending and retail objectives. The BDM is the primary communication link between the Customer and Big Heart Pet Brands (BHBP), and is responsible to insure resources are utilized and communication channels are open to implement BHPB programs at the customer. The BDM also has the responsibility to enroll and lead our multi-functional team resources to achieve our desired business and relationship outcomes at petco. This position is located in San Diego, California.
Responsibilities
• Financial
o Manage all aspects of trade spending to insure BHPB funds are effectively utilized in a fair and equitable manner consistent with Brand promotional strategies to achieve merchandising objectives
o Direct and monitor execution of account plans to achieve volume objectives and key sales priorities (distribution, pricing, shelving and merchandising)
o Monitor post-promotional analysis on a customer basis to assess the impact of BHPB promotions, and make appropriate adjustments to refine and improve results
• Execution
o Execute Customer Planning Model (Assess, Build, Commit, Execute) including leading the Joint Business Planning process.
o Provide strategic input, reflecting marketplace and customer requirements into the Big Heart Pet Brands AOP/marketing plans planning process
o Effectively manage administrative responsibilities including information requests, competitive intelligence, results tracking and analysis, expense reports, forecasts, deduction management, etc.
o Study and understand Consumer & Category insight tools and resources required to promote effective analysis leading to the identification of opportunities to create customer solutions
o Facilitate appropriate levels of internal and external BHPB resources to be prioritized and deployed against key accounts to achieve business objectives
o Develop persuasive business presentations to identify short-term and long-term opportunities with the customer
• Customer
o Understands the customer’s strategy and capitalizes on opportunities to link the customer’s strategy with BHPB’s strategy to build a competitive advantage.
o Penetrate selected accounts to develop the BHPB franchise by focusing on adding value and facilitating the execution of strategic initiatives (such as, Category Management, Item Optimization, creative, theme-oriented merchandising, or distribution initiatives)
o Works to strengthen BHPB’s strategic relationship with Customer by building rapport and maintaining regular contact
o Analyzes industry trends and competitive actions to develop alternative strategies and tactics to maintain and/or improve competitive advantage with customers
• Development
o Works with their Team Lead to assess personal development needs and develop the appropriate development/training plans to facilitate personal and professional growth
o Monitors the planned execution with customer and capitalizes on emerging opportunities/progress in the coming fiscal year
Education
• Undergraduate Degree Required
Years of Experience
• 5-10 years region or headquarters retail sales experience in consumer packaged goods
industry or broker
Special Requirements
• Proven record of success in retail grocery industry with consumer packaged goods or broker experience
• Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to influence customer contacts
• Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills and analytical and problem solving abilities
• Strong computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Nielsen or other syndicated data and competent in PowerPoint.
