Subjective: The following puppy was seen at the AVI this morning while transiting Doha (BKK to GRU).
I received a call at 06:15 and was informed the puppy was offloaded and non-responsive.
Objective: Upon entering the AVI, respiration was severely depressed and the puppy not responding to stimuli. It was in lateral recumbency, pale, severely hypothermic, with a marked decrease in respiratory rate.
The puppy was stimulated, gently warmed, and 50% dextrose rubbed on its gums. When it began to respond dextrose/water was given slowly by mouth.
The puppy was on its feet again and drinking on its own within 40 minutes. It refused the dry kibble food provided by the consignor, and the food we offered.
07:00 Medical Exam – after he was responding and sitting up
T 36.8 mm pink crt 2 seconds bit dry, HR 132 RR 24 thor a naf abd. P soft no discomfort Quiet Alert and Responsive. 15 minutes later T 37.1 HR 160 RR 24. Passed very small amount of formed stool and a small amount of very concentrated urine.
Wt 0.57 kg Body Score 1.5/5 (Ideal 3/5)
We gently force fed a small amount of RC recovery. He swallowed easily but did not want to eat on his own. The food provided was dry kibble, and he was not interested.
We sent for puppy milk by RC from our hospital.
Tentative Diagnosis shock (hypothermia/hypoglycemia/dehydration)
07:30 QR duty Manager advised we hold the puppy for 24 hours in the hope it will gain a bit of strength.
Assessment: Puppies this young and with such low body weight and muscle mass, are at risk on longer flights They have a hard time sustaining their body temperature, glucose levels and hydration.
We do not have a medical history for this puppy, but as he is also very young, he may be at risk in regards to viruses and parasites.
Plan: Try and encourage this puppy to eat on his own. Offer water at all times. Hot water bottle well wrapped in the cage. The cage tented to maintain warmth. We will encourage him to drink the puppy milk hourly. Food provided by the consignor will continue to be offered. If he still refuses this we will try some RC Junior soft to see if he likes this more than the recovery diet he did not like.
On an hourly basis we will monitor: vitals, drinking, amount eaten, urine, stool and attitude
Thank you for your help this morning.
