In the past, lost revenue could be offset by alternative
income sources, but these revenue streams will diminish as
accountable care organizations increasingly dominate the
health care landscape. As an incentive to retain academic
surgeons and uphold the quality of intraoperative education,
compensation should be offered for intraoperative teaching.
The purpose of this study is to quantify the time and
opportunity cost to the attending surgeon for intraoperative
teaching during index plastic surgery cases.
