An interesting technology recently tested in Australia
for fat and protein removal has been foam
flotation, which has historically been used in the
mineral industry (Jameson flotation cell). Bremmell
et al. (1994) describe the use of foam flotation to
reduce BOD by 70% and fats by 6-fold in dairy
wastewater. The wastewater is chemically flocculated,
followed by foam flotation using an induced
flotation cell. The technology has not been applied
to slaughterhouse effluent, but looks promising.
