The agricultural sector provides an important contribution to the Moroccan economy,
accounting for about 15-19% of the GDP and employing almost 40% of the population.
Morocco’s agricultural production depends mainly on rainfall, as only about 15% of the
planted area is irrigated. As a result, agricultural output fluctuates heavily from year to
year. With its significant contribution to the country’s GDP, the agriculture sector largely
determines the growth of the whole Moroccan economy. The large fluctuations in output
are also reflected in fluctuations in agricultural imports of some commodities such as
animal feed, wheat and oilseeds.
