The existing tension with CPI(M) lessened a little in August 1986 when the Sanghatana arrived at a political understanding with the Lal Nishan Party, thus giving it some legitimacy. It is currently building political awareness by focusing on eco-political rights and paying attention to local medicine, forestry, and education. From 25 March to 24 April 1989, training camps were organized to improve the knowledge and skills of adivasi medicine men. The gang-rape of a woman activist of the group in October 1989 by CPI(M) workers has revived the old antagonism between the two. In the face of constant threats of violence from an organized party of the area, the future of the Sanghatana remains uncertain. However, with courage and initiation, it is determined to stay on. By and large local people have been responsible for the process of mobilization. However, the leadership of Pradip has been crucial. The sustenance and survival of volunteers have been often dependent on urban supporters. KS is important because it is one of those significant mass mobilization efforts, which have sustained their activities against heavy odds.
