Currently, both the San Mateo County Health System (SMCHS)
and the Santa Cruz County Health Department (SCCHD)
implement the “California Adolescent Family Life Program”
(AFLP), which grew out of a demonstration program providing
services to pregnant and parenting teens in the 1980s. The
program’s main goals are to do the following:
• Provide support for teen clients through case management
• Encourage the development of high quality relationships
with and between teens and their families
• Encourage healthy lifestyle decisions
• Increase the utilization of healthcare resources
• Increase the delivery of healthy babies
• Encourage and increase school attendance
• Prevent unintentional pregnancies among teens
