2. Definition of harsh environment
Although associated with biology the following definition APPLIES well to analytical instrumentation too: a harsh environment means such milieu in which it is difficult to live or survive. For an instrument, a harsh or inhospitable environment could be considered a set of conditions that can cause its malfunction over a period of time. An electrical circuit can be easily damaged or destroyed if introduced to water or high humidity levels. Other potentially damaging conditions include extreme temperatures and temperature cycles, penetration of particulates, electrostatic discharge, electromagnetic interference, vibrations, and physical impact.
