As mentioned above, the DNA base composition
of lactic acid bacteria is less than 50 mol% G1C. This
is a characteristic of the so-called Clostridium branch of the
gram-positive bacteria, in contrast to the gram-positive bacteria
of the Actinomycetes branch, which have a G1C content
higher than 50 mol%. L. pontis, however, has a DNA base
composition of 53 to 54 mol% G1C (341) and is phylogenetically
very closely related to L. reuteri, with a G1C content of 40
to 43 mol% (162).
