One movement that was influenced by Surrealism was Abstract Expressionism. This movement lacked a common style, embracing emotion and energy in art. The Abstract Expressionists believed in the importance of personal expression without formal representation. They found Abstract artworks to lack feeling and Surrealist artworks to lack order. Despite these differences, they utilized some techniques of the Fantastic movement. Automatism became an important factor in their painting. Originating in 1950’s New York, the Abstract Expressionist movement spread throughout United States, Latin America, and Western Europe. It divided into two groups called the "Action” group and the "Color” group. Many artists of the Action group also known as the "Gestural group, " were previous members of the Dada and Surrealism movements. They employed the automatic technique to create gestural paintings. One of these artists was American painter, Jackson Pollock (1912-1956).
