It is reported that ageing causes structural and functional changes in periodontal tissue.5 Structural, functional, and
cellular changes within periodontal tissues have been associated with an increase in oxidative stress in the ageing
process.6,7 This increase in the oxidative stress on ageing induces bone resorption8 and degradation of gingival collagen.
9 Therefore, the reduction of oxidative stress may be beneficial in order to suppress the structural changes on
ageing in periodontal tissue.10 In particular, an in vitro study demonstrates that dentifrices containing sodium ascorbyl
phosphate possessed antioxidant activity,11 and such dentifrices containing anti-oxidants may have a suppressive effect
on age-related oxidative stress.
