The early potato is grown during winter and spring months in Mediterranean-type
environments. In these environments, rainfall usually exceeds evaporation during winter
months and early spring. However, the amount of rainfall decrease as well as increasing
evapotranspiration due to increasing temperature and substantial soil water deficits which
develop after April. The period after April also coincides with tuber bulking stages of early
potato crop and irrigation should be applied when insufficient rainfall occurs in this period.
However, the number of irrigation and irrigation intervals are dependent on the rainfall
distribution and may differ from one season to another (Foti, 1999).
