to in the latter part of Chapter 15. As far as the UK is concerned a number of discernible phases can be identified in the
privatisation process that spanned the last two decades of the twentieth century. In the
first phase, between 1979 and 1983, government asset sales tended to generate relatively
small sums of money compared with later years and generally involved the sale of government
shares in companies such as British Aerospace, Britoil, BP, ICL and Ferranti.
