The results of the present study should, however, be interpreted with
caution due to the measures used to probe the outcome variables: accessibility,
affordability, and availability. Multi-item tools should be developed
to provide better insight and understanding of these variables. In addition,
the study included only two contextual independent variables (supplier size
in clientele and residence region); including more variables can provide a
more in-depth understanding of the variables that explain the dependent
variables. Despite its limitations, the present study represents an advance in
our understanding of the differences between age-groups of elderly people,
the problems they encounter in accessing specialist services, and some of
the factors that explain these barriers. This study opens a wide avenue for
further research to understand the factors that impede utilization of specialist
services among elderly people and can hinder their quality of life.
