Both the factory and the welfare office projects offer possibilities for parallel and follow-up projects. In the first one cold study mathematics and its contribution in the production process, not regarding it as a matter of transmitting mathematical skills in isolation from their possible application in everyday life. People should learn how to analyse how values which lie outside mathematics can be transformed into mathematical symobols, roles, and processes. Conversely, people should be able to recognize the nature and the values of the thinge that lie behind the formal mathematical symbols. People need to be able to do this particularly in situations where the technological processes and the mathematical activities associated with them give an impression of objective rationality, while the interests which lie behind them remain hidden.
