4. Conclusion
The results presented in this study, which to our knowledge is the first work dedicated to analyzing the quantity
of mangrove research, confirm the negligence of both the scientific community and national governments in
properly studying mangrove forests. Mangroves provide a unique ecosystem that has many advantages over
other ecosystems: they contain great biodiversity and biotechnological potential; they can produce many benefits
for human beings; and they are often located near urban areas. Mangrove environments are spread over North,
Central and South America as well as Asia, Africa and Oceania; they are present in many different countries and
are easily accessible to populated regions. The increasing degradation of this environment observed in recent
years could be related to the lack of scientific knowledge regarding its characteristics.
